How to Make a Wire Mesh Fence
A wire mesh fence is simple to build, but it has the advantage of being cheap and resistant. Being a cheap alternative to other types of fencing, it is a good idea to learn how to make one. It can be used to mark property lines, avoid intrusions and it is ideal in case of animals, since it is safe. It can also be used as temporary fence.
Tools and Materials Needed:
Tape measure
Spray paint
String
Posts
Post-hole digger
Concrete mix
Fence stretching tool
Fencing nails or clips
Wire mesh fencing
Step 1: Decide on the Location
Decide on the spot where you wish to set up the wire mesh fence and take the necessary measurements to allow you to buy the materials required to make it. You may need to remove trees, shrubs or plants which might be a bit in the way.
Step 2: Mark the Corner Posts
Once the fence line has been established start marking the spots where the corner posts will be set up. Dig the holes for these posts and insert a stake in each one.
Step 3: Run a String
The simplest and most effective way to ensure that you will eventually have a straight fence is to make use of the string technique. Run a string from one post to the next so as to make sure you will be moving in a straight line.
Step 4: Mark the Other Fence Posts
Then, mark where each of the fence posts will be set up, using some spray paint. Try to be accurate and place them at regular intervals from each other.
Step 5: Mark the Entrance/s
At this point it is best to decide and mark where you will be placing the entrance, and if you are going to establish more than one access point.
Step 6: Dig the Holes For The Posts
The next step is to dig the holes where the posts will be placed. Each hole will need to be rather deep as this will help to have a more resilient post and a more hard-wearing fence ultimately. For this job you may wish to use a post-hole digger which will help you dig the holes more quickly. The holes for the corner posts and the gate posts will need to be a bit deeper than the remaining fence posts. You may use wooden or steel posts.
Step 7: Fill The Holes
Start filling the holes with some dry cement, till at least half of the hole is full.
Step 8: Mount The Posts
Once the holes have been dug and filled you can start inserting the posts. This stage is technically referred to as plumbing the posts, since you will be pressing each post securely into the hole and encompassing it with the cement lying in there. Then, fill the remaining space of the hole with a mixture of cement and allow to dry well so that the posts will be securely installed.
Step 9: Attach the Wire Mesh Fencing
Then, once the posts are ready you can start attaching the wire mesh fencing to one of the corner posts. Pull it towards the next post in the line and stretch it well so as to avoid a sagging in the final fencing. It is best to nail it to each post at least at the top, bottom, and at least at two spots in between, as this will help to stretch it out tightly. Continue this procedure until all the wire mesh fencing has been affixed to all the posts. It is best to use woven wire mesh rather than the welded type. It is best to use a fence stretching tool. This will help you to make the wire tauter since it will be pulled and stretched effectively and consequently reduce the possibility of drooping and sagging. To fasten the wire mesh it is best to use fence clips or fencing nails as these are ideal to secure the fencing to the posts effectively. In fact, these types of clips nail straight and securely into the fence posts and are specialized for fence building projects.
